In this video we're going to mainly talk about dedicated servers.

We've spent a lot of time improving them and we have a couple of really juicy new features to unveil for you all today.

Before we dive into this though, I have a couple of really cool announcements to make.

The first one is that the official soundtrack for Satisfactory has been released on Steam, and it is available right freaking now, okay?

A lot of people have been asking us about the soundtrack, and we initially said that we were going to release it along with FFXI, but we got...

We got a little bit trigger happy, so we're releasing it now, okay?

The next thing I want to mention is a little something made by our friends over at BoxDragon, a different game dev studio in Gothenburg, sort of part of the, you know, the Coppicein family ecosystem.

And they've been tinkering on a strategy roguelike deck builder called As We Descend, and they just revealed this game this week, actually, so good for them.

Not much has been shown yet, but I just want to let you know that this exists and let you know that they're actually looking for people that might enjoy this type of genre to give them feedback on their game, because they're also planning to host a closed beta sometime in the near future.

Let's get to the main course.

All right.

Let's talk about dedicated servers.

So up until this point, we've needed to focus and prioritize our efforts on the main game.

So dedicated server support has always sort of fallen a bit short.

But as of one point, dedicated servers are going to get a bit more love.

Before we talk about the new features, I need to address one thing, and that is the current state when it comes to bugs when playing on dedicated servers.

There's a couple of bugs that happen on dedicated servers only.

And in some cases, these are pretty severe.

So in the past, we've not always had a chance to fix these issues, as we sort of had to focus on the main game.

But going forward, we're going to pay more attention to fixing these problems.

And we're also going to resolve some of the lingering issues that we've had up until this point.

You know, everything that might not be perfect on release, but our intention at least is to better support dedicated servers from now on.

And the goal is to not have, you know, any critical issues linger any longer.

Okay.

So with that out of the way, let's dive into the actual topic of the video, which is dedicated servers.

All right, let's go.

Here we go.

First of all, dedicated servers are going to be easier to install in general.

The distribution size has decreased significantly, so they're way faster to download now.

When setting up dedicated servers, the servers now only use one port from now on, and this is both for UDP and TCP, and that port is seven seven seven seven.

Sounds like a children's song.

Seven, seven, seven, seven, seven.

And it's important to remember to let both UDP and TCP through that one port.

The server now also correctly binds to both IPv v four and IPv v six endpoints simultaneously.

So you no longer need to use like the multi home command line option thingy if you need to bind it to IPv v four.

The server executable also now comes in both the form of a windowed application and a console application.

This is because there are some cases where having the server run as a windowed application can cause some issues in certain setups.

There are other benefits to the console application as well, such as having better logging and being able to run scripts and stuff like that that boot it up and etc.

Another improvement to dedicated servers is that we've implemented support for TLS, which stands for Transferred Layer Security, which is end to end encryption for both server traffic and game traffic.

When creating a dedicated server, you can either generate a certificate manually or have the server generate one for you when booting up automatically.

And when connecting to the server, you'll be prompted with the certificate to verify that the instance is safe to connect to.

This might sound a bit complicated, but it really is quite easy.

Like, even I could do it.

So, like, when you connect, you just need to check that the certificate is correct.

And, you know, if you don't care about this stuff, then you can just close your eyes and just press the button or whatever.

Just connect.

I just connect to any data server I find, honestly.

When booting up a fresh dedicated server, you'll be greeted by this little guy.

This is the Unreal console.

With this bad boy, you can clearly see server status.

You can see uptime, which build it's running, et cetera.

It's a bit better than the general console application that you get.

It also makes logging way better, because you'll be able to better filter logs.

And best of all, it has a built in terminal.

So you can type in supported server commands in the running instance right there and then.

So I mean, it's pretty nice.

Pretty nice.

Once you have the service set up and you've claimed the server with your user, which pretty much works the same way as before, it's now also easier to set up new game sessions and sort of the flow that follows the same as when you create any other game session in Satisfactory.

Dedicated servers now also support being able to set up advanced game settings right here in the menu.

So you no longer need to send up a save file with AGS enabled or anything like that.

It can all be set up in this menu.

And it'll also be possible to configure AGS settings when loading save files on the server.

There's also a couple of new configuration settings in the server menu.

It's now possible to set stuff like the save interval, server's restart interval, whether you want to send gameplay data or not, and most importantly, being able to set the network quality on server easily.

Some of these settings will require the server to restart to take effect, and this is clearly marked in the menu now when this is the case.

We might still add more options to this menu in the future, such as being able to set the connection timeout.

Another neat thing is that it's now possible to download the save file directly from the server in this menu.

However, this is only possible for server admins.

And on the client side, one improvement we've done is that in game, the server now notifies all clients when it's about to save.

So everyone will get like a notification that the server is saving, letting people know that the server might currently be under a heavy workload, and in some cases be a bit unresponsive.

This feature is not exclusive to dedicated servers, so this will work in regular multiplayer as well.

Some things that we weren't able to finish yet are that we want to add the ability to set client privileges, such as being able to have people join the server but maybe not be allowed to dismantle or stuff like that.

We also want to improve how blueprints are handled server side.

So it'll be easier to sort of upload blueprints to the server or make it possible to use blueprints created locally on client or something.

I don't know.

We haven't quite figured this stuff out yet, but we'll see what we do there.

But this is something that we at least want to look into in the future, I think.

So these are some of the new additions to dedicated servers.

But wait, there's more.

I've saved the best to last, at least in my opinion.

And that is that we've implemented support for an HTTP API that can handle HTTP request methods between the server and the client.

What the hell does that mean?

Tell me what that means.

So what this means is that it will be possible to develop external applications that can talk directly to the dedicated server.

By using token authentication, applications are going to be able to send HTTP requests to the server.

Such requests could be like getting the server state, or any information about the current game session, or telling the server to pause or shut down.

There's a bunch of stuff that you are going to be able to take advantage of using this API, and it makes the server

way more extendable for scripting and any kind of cool service that you might want to develop for it.

And depending on what people make with this, we might extend the functionality for the API in the future.

And while we don't have any documentation for the API right now, we do plan to release some documentation for the API in the future.

But the thing that I am looking forward to the most is once the modding community managed to get proper modding support for dedicated servers, which, by the way, I know you all are working really hard on this, like just hang in there modders, OK?

Once they do this, they're going to be able to create their own hooks into this API.

So we're really looking forward to see what you people make with this.

Cool, so yeah, those are some of the new features and improvements coming to dedicated servers in One.O.

But the video ain't over yet, okay?

We actually have more shit to cover because I also want to talk about some improvements and new features coming to the regular online subsystem handling the regular, you know, peer to peer connectivity for the game.

Yeah, I don't know what to tell you, man.

There's a lot of stuff we've made.

We've been hard at work on this.

So up until this point, when creating a regular peer to peer game session, we've been using Epic's online services to manage the connectivity aspect of things.

And on Steam, we've now also implemented support for Steam's backend version of this.

So people on Steam are going to be able to choose between using EOS or Steam's backend when creating game sessions.

This will only be viable if you're only playing with other people on Steam, because if you want to cross play between Epic and Steam, you'll need to use EOS still.

But now the option is there at least, and it will be sort of possible to opt out of cross play if you choose.

There's also going to be a single player option to sort of disable the online subsystem if you know you don't want anyone to be able to connect to your session.

And it should optimize the game a little bit if you do this.

If you want to disable online play completely for the session, you can potentially

Maybe get a tiny bit more performance, I don't know.

If you do create a single player session, please note that you will need to sort of restart the game session if you want to switch back to online.

It will no longer be seamless to connect to you.

It is also important to note that this doesn't mean that the game will start pausing when you open the main menu, even in single player.

I know a lot of people really want that, but yeah, we still need to sort of implement handling pausing and unpausing regardless of if you're playing online and

I don't think we'll have time to do that for Wampanoag, honestly.

There's also going to be an option to connect directly to an IP address, circumventing sort of all these services that are in place to sort of make connectivity seamless.

This is going to require a bit of knowledge and require a bit of technical and networking knowledge, as you will need to sort of connect manually in the console.

But we figured that we'd add this option in case, you know, Steam's or Epic's services go down and, you know, if you are a bit savvy and can manage.
