  • English Pronunciation.
  • Lesson 11.
  • Topic, Can and Can't.
  • Part 1. Can't.
  • Listening Task.
  • Watch and listen.
  • How well do you understand the difference between can and can't in spoken English?
  • I'll bet you didn't know that I can't see very well without contacts or glasses.
  • It's true.
  • I have very poor vision.
  • I'm what they call nearsighted.
  • That means I can see clearly when things are very close, but I can't see things at a distance.
  • Other people are farsighted.
  • They can see at a distance, but they can't see clearly when objects are close.
  • For example, they can't read without glasses.
  • In my case, hopefully everything will change in two days because I'm going to have eye surgery.
  • The technology these days is pretty good because they can correct my vision in about 15 minutes with a laser.
  • I'm a little nervous, but I can hardly wait for the results, so wish me luck.
  • In this lesson, we're going to talk about two verbs, Can and Can't.
  • Let's first talk about the negative.
  • Can't is a contraction.
  • It's a short form for cannot.
  • The phonetic transcription for can't looks like this.
  • Can't is a stressed word.
  • No matter where it is in a phrase or a sentence, it will always receive stress.
  • So let's note that.
  • Can't is a stressed word.
  • In fact, it's the vowel sound that receives the stress.
  • It's going to be long and strong.
  • Let's try saying can't in a sentence.
  • I can't see.
  • This is true.
  • Without my glasses or contacts, I can't see.
  • In this sentence, both verbs receive stress.
  • Both vowel sounds here and here are long and strong.
  • I can't see.
  • Now, in everyday speech, Americans often change this pronunciation to something else.
  • What is that something else?
  • Let me explain.
  • Instead of this final T, Americans take it off and replace it.
  • They take it off and use a glottal stop instead.
  • The glottal stop is a stop of the airflow here in your throat.
  • So you don't hear can't.
  • You hear can't.
  • The vowel sound is still long and strong, but I cut off that T and I cut off the airflow with the glottal stop.
  • Now you may be thinking, glottal stop?
  • What is that?
  • How do I make it?
  • Well, if you can say words like uh-oh or uh-uh, then you're making a glottal stop.
  • Uh-oh is an expression of surprise, like you made a mistake.
  • Uh-uh, meaning no, don't do that.
  • Uh-oh, uh-uh.
  • In the middle of those words, you have a glottal stop.
  • So if you can say these, you can make the glottal stop in can't.
  • Now, let's go back to the sentence.
  • The first way is I can't see.
  • Now with the glottal stop, I can't see.
  • Keep the vowel long and strong.
  • Can't see.
  • But cut off that final T and use a glottal stop.
  • I can't see.
  • Let's try some exercises.
  • Exercise 2 Complete the statements.
  • Use your own ideas.
  • 1.
  • I wish I could, but I can't.
  • For example, I wish I could sing well, but I can't.
  • 2. When I was a child I was able to, but I can't anymore.
  • In my case, when I was a child I was able to do gymnastics, but I can't anymore.
  • And 3.
  • There's one law I don't agree with.
  • It states that you can't...
  • I'll let you think about that and give your own answer.
  • End of Part 1. Please go on to the next part of this lesson.
