Hello, YouTube, and welcome back to my channel.

I have been wanting to talk about this for quite some time, and I realized when I was getting ready for this video that I actually haven't shared anything really about this topic on my channel, on my YouTube channel.

I've talked about this a lot on my Instagram, I've talked a lot about this on my TikTok, but I haven't really spoken of this subject matter on my YouTube, which I thought was really weird.

So it was due time, and you guys made that very known when I posted a poll over on my community page.

There's so much.

There's literally so much I want to say, so we're just going to dive right in because I don't want this to end up being a 30-minute video.

I want this to just be short, powerful, to the point, because I want to honor your time, and there's a lot to unpack with this.

You guys know by the title of this video that I am going to be talking about all things sex today, the things that I wish I would have known previous to getting married as a Christian, because it's not talked about enough in the church,

And I'm not going to go off on that little side rant, but I do believe that the church is doing us a disservice by not talking about this enough.

Yeah, sure, like women's conferences and men's conferences kind of dabble on the subject, but I have yet to see an entire series be done over the topic of sex, because it makes people squirm, right?

It makes people uncomfortable.

It's not a yay, feel good topic.

It's just, it's icky, right?

No one wants to talk about that, especially if you're going to church with your mom or your sister or someone that you love that's not your spouse.

It's a taboo subject, and I remember growing up in church and being told, well, just don't have sex before marriage or you'll go to hell.

That was it.

That was the basic description I got in a box, and I was just told that it was bad.

Don't have sex.

It's terrible, and this isn't going to be about purity culture, because I can make an entire video over purity culture in itself, but what I do want this video to be about is the things that no one is really talking about,

The things that no one tells you about, the things that the church isn't telling us about, all of that, and I will say this.

If you're new here, I was not a virgin when I got married to my now husband.

We both had a past.

I've been divorced.

He's been divorced.

We just both had a string of history, as a lot of people in today's world do, but I had a radical encounter with Jesus in 2019 and decided to save myself for marriage again at a certain point in that time before I met my husband.

Sexual sin was like the last stronghold on my life, and when it finally broke off of me, praise God, I was celibate, and I decided to wait until marriage, which was seemingly one of the most challenging things I've ever done,

Because when you've had sex and then all of a sudden you're being told that it's best to not have sex, it's just a whole whirlwind of emotions.

I have an entire episode on my podcast with my husband where we talk about sex.

That's literally the topic is let's talk about sex.

I will link that down in the description box below, but without further ado, I want to jump in.

I have some notes in front of me because there's some really important bullet points that I just don't want to miss.

We are going to be talking about sex in marriage.

The very first thing that I've learned as a Christian who's now married is that sex is not about you.

I know that's going to ruffle some feathers because we live in a very selfish world, right?

Single sex, like when you're single and you're sleeping around outside of the context of marriage, which is opposite of what we're called to do as Christians, and I've been there so I'm not casting judgment on anyone,

You guys.

Anything I'm like calling myself out, I've been there.

It's very selfish.

I remember when I was in that state of mind and it was a very, very selfish time in my life.

Even when I came to know the Lord and I was still trying to make it fit into my lifestyle and the Lord just convicted me so heavily to the point that I was like, I'm giving this up completely because Holy Spirit always gets his way.

Sex, if you're not careful, can be a very selfish thing, but when you say I do, when you get married, your vows are not, I will love the Lord, I will love myself, and then I will love my spouse.

Your vows are, I will love the Lord, I will love my spouse, and then I will put myself last.

As a Christian, we are called to die to ourself and put others before us.

And of course, there's times and situations where like you should put on your own oxygen mask before you help others.

I get that.

That's not what I'm saying.

But in this scenario, in marriage, marriage is an act of dying to self.

Sex is not about you, and yes, the Lord wants you to feel satisfied from physical intimacy with your spouse.

That's a given, right?

Like, the Lord in Song of Solomon, if you don't know this and you've never read this, the Lord is very clear that he wants us to have fun, to be fruitful and multiply, to enjoy sex, and we talked about that in this podcast episode.

But sex is also catering to your spouse and making sure that their needs are met, their needs are satisfied.

And I think that there's just a disconnect in marriage.

I think that there's a lot of people that still have that selfishness on when it comes to sex, and that can be a really slippery slope because then you get into disrespecting your spouse, not honoring what they want,

That kind of a thing.

But that alone is probably one of the very first things that I realized, is that sex is not actually about you.

The next thing that I've learned, and I think I knew going into marriage, but I just feel like this needs to be said because there might be someone listening to this video that has an unrealistic expectation.

Married sex is not going to look like the movies, TV shows, maybe a book you've read, and definitely not porn.

All of these things, especially porn, are destroying marriages.

And I will get to a future video about pornography.

I've been very open, I've also struggled with that in my past.

I am free by the grace of God, it has been years since I've ever even entertained the thought of it.

But unfortunately, we live in a broken and fallen world.

We live in a world where they have manipulated and perverted sex, right?

And they've made it to be all these things, and almost to the point where, this is just my own take, it feels as if the movies and TV shows have made married sex to come off as lame or boring.

And that's why you see all these affairs in movies, all these relationships being destroyed by people cheating on TV shows because they're trying to get to the other side.

The grass isn't greener on the other side, I'm just telling you.

That is a false reality that the media and Hollywood is trying to paint that is destroying marriages.

If you are a Christian, and you are leading up to getting married, or you are going to be married one day and you can't wait for that, you need to discuss expectations with your spouse previous to saying,

I do.

Premarital counseling is a big thing, Jordan and I went through it, and I'm so grateful that we did.

I will always be an advocate for that because it was just incredible.

It opened up the opportunity to have those really uncomfortable-ish conversations before we ever got married.

My left eye is twitching, you guys.

You want to lay ground rules.

How many times a week would you like to have sex?

What are your desires?

It's okay because you guys are going to have different sex drives.

No two people are going to have the same exact sex drive.

It's hormones, it's things, it's fluctuations.

That's okay.

But go into that marriage and making sure that those expectations are laid out on the table.

It's a really simple conversation to have.

I know it can be uncomfortable, especially if you're waiting for marriage, which I hope you are.

It can just be awkward, right?

Because you've never been behind closed doors together, so then you are talking about some of the most vulnerable things of how many times a week you want to have sex.

And the last thing I'll say about that is not placing expectations from a previous experience onto your spouse.

That is not fair to them at all.

If you come with a past, it's not fair to put any past experiences that you have onto your spouse.

Because again, married sex is not single sex.

My next thing that I've learned, and I wish I would've known about sex, is that sex is going to change with different seasons of life.

I think this is something that we all hear about, but then when we're getting married or when we're engaged and we're just so excited and we're like, life's going to be amazing after we say I do and the wedding night and all the things,

I think we're like, oh no, it's going to be like that for everyone but me.

We're going to be fine.

Our sex life is never going to be affected by life's circumstances, right?

But there will be ebbs and flows.

That is okay.

That is totally normal.

It is totally healthy.

A really good example is when I was pregnant.

I was super nauseous, like 24-7, dealing with nausea, did not want to do anything, was so exhausted I could hardly work.

I was literally up at 7 a.m.

And then taking a nap by 10 a.m.

For two hours.

It was just crazy.

That was the season of our lives where our sex life was altered a little bit.

That's okay.

It's for a beautiful reason, right?

Same thing with kids.

We obviously do not have any biological kids of our own but we are foster parents and we've had two babies in our home at two different times.

I can say that.

It changes everything.

You're exhausted, you're fatigued, you're not sleeping, you've got spit up on you, there's diapers everywhere, there's baby bottles everywhere.

You're just trying to get through another day.

For you to think that everything is just going to be sunshine and rainbows all the time, that's not realistic.

There's going to be ebbs and flows and that's totally normal.

It doesn't mean that you don't desire each other.

It doesn't mean that there's a lack of desire for your spouse or vice versa.

It just means that life is challenging sometimes and y'all are exhausted.

For me, when I was pregnant, one thing that I did was I remember specifically one night grabbing Jordan's shoulders and I looked at him and I was like, baby, I love you.

My desire for you has not changed one bit.

I'm just so exhausted and so nauseous and I promise we're going to get through this and he was like, yeah, I know.

Just giving him those words of affirmation were so good.

If that's you and you're in that situation, just have that conversation with your spouse.

Tell them how much you love them.

Remind them that you still desire them.

Remind them that they are still the one, the apple of your eye because hearing those words of affirmation can really be a game changer.

The next thing that I've learned that I wish I would have known about sex before marriage because again, single sex is selfish.

It's just different, right?

When you're in a marriage, you are seeing that person at their worst, at their best.

You're seeing them 24-7, whereas when you're single, you're just seeing a person in their best state, right?

When they want to be around you.

Intimacy actually starts well before the bedroom.

You cannot just show up and expect to have sex.

Sure, yeah, that happens, like maybe the first few months of marriage, but then life hits and you're busy with work, this, that.

There's stresses in life.

There's things that come up.

Intimacy starts before the bedroom.

Women, we as women want to feel desired.

We want to feel pursued.

We want to feel swooned, right?

Like we want to feel like his prize.

We want him to feel, we want him to want to pursue us and men want to be validated.

They want to be seen.

They want to be told that they're proud of.

They want to feel macho, like hoorah, like that's just what men want, right?

They are the pursuers and we are the pursuit.

That starts before y'all have sex at night.

Like that starts in the morning.

It starts hours before.

Women want to be complimented.

Women want to be seen and heard and loved and men want to just feel appreciated and all the things, right?

Women do not just want physical touch during physical intimacy.

I mean, maybe some do because maybe some don't like physical touch.

For me, one of my love languages is physical touch.

I want my hand held.

I want his hand on my back.

I want the forehead kisses, all the cute little things.

That stuff prepares you for the bedroom.

The next thing I've learned, and this is a big one, it's that sex needs to be a priority.

The enemy is going to come after your sex life.

Like if the enemy cannot get you to stumble and fall with porn or lust or having wandering eyes or having a private conversation with the opposite sex that you shouldn't be having, whether it's through text message or in person,

If the enemy cannot get you to stumble with any of those things, he's going to come after your sex life because it's going to put tension in your marriage.

You have to be mindful of this.

He will send distractions.

He will send busyness.

He will send crazy work schedule.

He will send all the things.

You have to be mindful of that.

You have to be mindful of making sex a priority.

My next point, communication, communication, communication.

Girls, you have to be able to tell your husband what does feel good and what doesn't feel good.

If something doesn't feel right, if it feels off, you need to be able to voice that.

You need to be able to speak up.

And on the flip side of that, he needs to be able to provide that emotionally safe place to have those conversations.

Are those conversations going to be awkward?

Yes.

Are they going to be uncomfortable?

Probably.

But I promise you, you're going to be so grateful that you did.

You're going to be thankful.

You are going to look back and be like, wow, I'm so glad that I brought that up to my husband.

And that leads me into one of my last points.

It takes work to have a healthy sex life with your husband, with your spouse.

You are not going to just enter into a marriage, even if you're like two incredibly healthy people, you're not going to just waltz into marriage and boom, have a healthy sex life.

Like you are going to have to take time to learn each other, to discover each other.

And that's okay.

That's part of the process that God intended husband and wife to have.

It's going to take work.

It's going to take laying down your own expectations.

We talked about that prioritizing sex, making sure that you're putting your spouse before all the other XYZ that you have to get done that day, communicating and playing up to the moment.

Like it is not just boom, let's have sex.

It's leading up to the moment.

How are you treating your spouse?

How are you speaking to your spouse?

Are you complimenting them?

Like this is just an example, but as for me, my husband will hear the most compliments every day from his wife.

Ain't no one else trying to out compliment me.

Sex is not going to be perfect.

As soon as you say I do, is it going to be fun?

Yeah, absolutely.

Like our honeymoon, you guys, I have zero, zero complaints about our honeymoon.

Literally one of the best weeks of our lives.

It was so amazing.

Anything worth having in life is going to take effort.

That sounds so cliche, but it's literally so true because sex is not just physical intimacy.

It's emotional intimacy.

It's spiritual intimacy.

It's emotional safety.

It's all the things, right?

Like you need to be able to have that safe space for you to be able to want to have a healthy sex life.
